Conflict Resolution Part 1
Sue Verduin-Miller, LMSW
Susan Verduin-Miller has developed, refined and practiced a method of conflict resolution over 20 years of working with children as a school social worker. She uses an approach to communication developed in Imago Therapy and will demonstrate a conflict resolution process that creates and uses empathy. It is a method of working with children to create an empathic, non-defensive atmosphere in which they will learn the essential elements of conflict resolution. The seminar participants will have a deeper understanding of the role of brain functioning during conflict and resolution. Participants will be given the opportunity to learn how to teach this process to groups of children and will be able to experience this approach through role-play.

Psychosocial Treatment for Pediatric Weight Management
Kimberly Slendak, LMSW, Helen DeVos Children's Hospital
Adele Cadieux, PsyD, Pediatric Psychologist/Healthy Weight Center Psychologist, Helen DeVos Children's Hospital
Childhood obesity has more than tripled in the last 30 years. In 2008, it was reported one third of children and adolescents were overweight or obese. It is estimated if changes are not implemented, the children of today will be the first generation that is not expected to outlive their parents due to the effects of being overweight or obese. Treatment for these children is beyond telling them and their families to "eat healthy and move more." The causes of childhood obesity are numerous and treatment must be geared towards addressing as many of the causes as possible, including psychosocial factors and barriers. Learn how you can make an impact on psychosocial treatment for pediatric weight management.

Child and Adolescent ADHD
Dean College of Human Medicine, Michigan State University
Dr. Rappley will discuss how many aspects of research in ADHD complements what we have learned about brain development from early life through young adult years. Studies in behavioral aspects of ADHD, neuropsychology, psychopharmacology, neuroimaging and genetics converge to highlight the importance of dopaminergic pathways and anatomic centers of the brain in understanding ADHD.
All seminars will be at Kent ISD in the Grand Room
